Are Facebook events the new smartmobs?

I think the answer is yes: Facebook is perfect to invite people to your private party. The downside is that it's so easy to say "yes" to a Facebook RSVP that eventually only 30% of them actually show up. Maybe if Facebook added an "export to iCal/Outlook" feature people would remember. Same thing happened to Belgian singer Brahim. Brahim Attaeb has 4800 friends on Facebook and knows full well it's the 2008 equivalent of answering fanmail: he uses it to keep in touch with his audience. So when he organised a free acoustic concert last Monday, he only invited his Facebook friends. And although the event had 229 confirmed guests, only 75 of them actually showed up.
More on the event in last night's Volt TV programme. Also featuring my 20 seconds of fame. Spent over an hour in a small dark room with Kobe Ilsen for this, but totally worth it! Hat tip to Nanske - see also Wat is de invloed van Facebook.

Ik vraag me af waarom we die andere 29'40" niet mogen zien. En waarom het daar zo donker was.
Wat zouden we zien? Bnox die verdrinkt in de bambi-ogen van Kobe Ilsen? :-p

Actually exporting the calendar is possible. Works like a charm too, can't miss those events anymore and even birthdays show up in iCal. Win.

Oh, sorry about the birthdays, just noticed I have them sync'd using a different tool. My bad. Events do export though.

Maybe Facebook should rename the RSVP possibilities:
- Yes => Maybe, possibly I'll be there
- Maybe => No
- No => I wouldn't come to your event even if you would pay me serious money to be there.
